OUR MISSION
The Carbon Academy is where we come together to raise awareness on carbon and its effects on the environment.
Raise Awareness
Calculating your personal carbon footprint is a good way to start being carbon conscious. There are various links and user-friendly tools available for you to calculate your carbon footprint. All you need to do is input certain information such as the type of housing you live in, size of your home, its energy efficiency etc. —, your usual mode of transport and your lifestyle, such as consumption of meat and local products, or management of food waste and technological waste.
Once you have calculated your personal or organisational carbon footprint, you are now able to clearly identify and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. From an organisation level, it allows companies to publish their environmental performance statistics, which can be used as information to raise awareness. Basically, it serves as an effective tool for environmental and energy management.
When you calculate the carbon footprint of your home, you can raise awareness to those living with you. On the other hand, employees in an organisation can look through the corporation’s environmental statistics and be more conscious of how they are contributing to carbon emissions at work. Once those around you are educated, you are successful in influencing others and making a better change for the Earth.
Inspire people to come together and take action
Anywhere you are, you can influence those living with you to reduce your carbon footprint.
Volunteering work is one way you can contribute, by working with organisations that specialise in reducing our carbon emissions. You can even invite your friends and families to volunteer with you, to allow all of you to educate yourselves on this issue, and influence others to do the same.
In an organisation, it is also possible to play your part and influence a larger group of people.
1. Working from Home
The COVID-19 pandemic forced millions of people to work from home. A simple but highly effective way for companies to help the environment is to allow the flexible working trend to continue.
The ultimate way to reduce emissions generated by your daily commute is, of course, not to set off in the first place. Working from home is likely to reduce their carbon footprint if their journey to the office is longer than 6 kilometers.
Even taking into account the increased use of household electricity, the overall impact would be an annual decline of 24 million tonnes of CO2.
2. Reduce wastage in the workplace
If companies are going to trumpet their green credentials to their customers, they must ensure their own offices are managed in an environmentally responsible way. The most effective way is to ensure all buildings are properly insulated to the highest standards, and built from sustainable materials that are low carbon, or recycled and recyclable. Well-designed new buildings can be zero-carbon, requiring no heating or cooling, dramatically reducing emissions and operating costs.
By setting the highest standards in the workplace, companies can support staff to transfer their environmentally friendly habits from work into the home and make a significant difference to their personal carbon footprint.
